Michelle Obama la esposa del senador Barack Obama prometió en la isla del Encanto a todos los boricuas que si su esposo gana la presidencia de Estados Unidos, asignará fondos para que Puerto Rico inicie un proceso de autodeterminación que comience en la isla. ¿Será?

"Si otros candidatos dicen que creen en la autodeterminación, lo que pienso que va a ser distinto no es la posición, sino en los recursos que él va a poner en asegurar que la atención de su administración va a estar enfocada en la gente de Puerto Rico", destacó en entrevista radial (WKAQ).

Obama dijo que ella y su esposo creían que la mayoría de los ciudadanos en Puerto Rico deben decidir si quieren permanecer con el estatus actual, anexarse como un estado de Estados Unidos o convertirse en una nación independiente.

"La decisión del estatus de Puerto Rico tiene que venir de la gente de la isla y él va a apoyar esa decisión totalmente", sostuvo.

Los habitantes de Puerto Rico están casi divididos en partes iguales sobre la cuestión del estatus de la isla.

En referéndums han elegido permanecer como un territorio estadounidense y han rechazado convertirse en un estado o independizarse.

La isla es un territorio de Estados Unidos desde 1898 y los nacidos en Puerto Rico tienen ciudadanía estadounidense desde el 1917.

El gobierno tiene un delegado en el Congreso que tiene voz, pero no voto y los puertorriqueños pueden votar en las primarias presidenciales, pero no por el presidente estadounidense. ¿Les creeremos?
